The Itabashi Art Museum was opened on May 20, 1979 as the first municipal art museum in the 23 cities of Tokyo. On its 40th anniversary this year in 2019, the museum will reopen after a large-scale renovation that meets the needs of the museum’s various activities. The main collections of the museum are Early Modern Japanese Paintings including the Edo Kano School, Avant-Garde art from the Taisho to early Showa era, and works of artists who have connections with Itabashi.
It has held important exhibitions that introduce Edo culture and the Ikebukuro Montparnasse School, based on research and the collection of artworks. Moreover, it holds exhibitions on illustration and design including the Bologna Children’s Book Fair’s Illustrators Exhibition. The aim of the museum is to become more widely known among visitors through lectures and workshops related to these exhibitions.
